Design
Both phones flaunt their metal unibody design and look very similar. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 however, is slimmer but heavier compared to the Redmi Note 3. The Redmi Note 4 measures 8.35mm and weighs 175 grams while the Redmi Note 3 has thickness of 8.7mm and weighs 164 grams.
The Redmi Note 4 additionally comes with chamfered edges and 2.5D curved glass on the front which the Redmi Note 3 lacks. While the Redmi Note 3 houses speaker grill on the rear, the Redmi Note 4 has it on the bottom. Besides, placement of all other buttons, ports and sensors is the same as the predecessor. The Redmi Note 4 comes in three color variants- Dark Grey, Gold and Matte Black color options.
Display
Both smartphones feature a 5.5-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The Redmi Note 4 additionally comes with 2.5D curved glass. It is the first Redmi smartphone to feature 2.5D curved glass on the front.
Camera
The Redmi Note 4 sports a lower resolution 13 mega pixel CMOS camera on the rear compared to 16 mega pixel primary camera on the Redmi Note 3. Rear cameras of both phones are assisted by dual tone LED flash, f/2.0 aperture and PDAF. For selfie lovers, both devices sport a 5 mega pixel front camera.

Hardware & Performance
The Redmi Note 3 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor paired with Adreno 510 GPU while the Redmi Note 4 comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset which is apparently less powerful compared to Redmi Note 3. Yet, the Redmi Note 4 performs very well and also delivers a better battery life since it consumes less power. As for AnTuTu benchmarks, the Redmi Note 4 scores around 56,000 while the Redmi Note 3 scores around 70,000 points, which is around 25% higher compared to Redmi Note 4. Moving on to gaming, there may be some loss in the absolute performance, but you will hardly notice any difference in the real life performance since the power of a Snapdragon 625 with Adreno 506 GPU is capable of playing casual games with ease.
Based on RAM and storage, the Redmi Note 3 comes in two variants- 3GB RAM+32GB storage and 2GB RAM+16GB storage. The Redmi Note 4 on the other hand, comes in three variants- 3GB RAM+64GB storage, 3GB RAM+32GB storage and 2GB RAM+32GB storage. Both phones support expandable storage using microSD card.
Software
The Redmi Note 3 runs Android Lollipop operating system wrapped under MIUI 7 while the Redmi Note 4 runs Android 7.0 Nougat Preview with MIUI 8. Both phones come loaded with plenty of customization options.
Battery
While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 packs a 4050mAh battery, the Redmi Note 4 has a slightly more powerful 4100mAh battery that offers exceptionally good battery life. The Redmi Note 4 is very efficient on battery usage as the Snapdragon 625 chipset is very power-efficient.
Additional Features
Both smartphones feature fingerprint sensor for additional security. Both Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Redmi Note 3 are hybrid dual SIM phones which means that you can either use two SIM cards or one SIM card and one microSD card simultaneously.
Price
The 4GB RAM+64GB storage variant of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 carries a price tag of Rs. 12,999. The 3GB RAM+32GB storage version carries a price tag of Rs. 10,999 and the 2GB RAM+32GB storage version costs Rs. 9,999. The Redmi Note 3 is priced at Rs. 9,999 and Rs. 11,999 for the 2GB RAM+16GB storage and 3GB RAM+32GB storage variants respectively.
Verdict
Needless to say, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 brings numerous upgrades over the predecessor like more internal memory, slightly more battery capacity and 2.5D curved glass. Gaming fanatics may feel that the Redmi Note 4 is a downgrade in terms of processor since it packs a Snapdragon 625 chipset which seems a bit inferior to the Snapdragon 650 chipset of Redmi Note 3. In real life performance however, this difference is not noticeable.
Moreover, change of rear camera from 16 mega pixel to 13 mega pixel does not show any major difference in the image quality, which is again a good thing. All in all, like its predecessor, the Redmi Note 4 is a super affordable smartphone that has a lot to offer in terms of premium design, great specs and long lasting battery.
