Vivo has launched their Selfie-Centric Smartphone Vivo V5s in India recently and it is going on sale starting 6th May 2017. In this post, we share our review of the Vivo V5s and how it fares as your everyday use phone.
Vivo V5s Design
Vivo V5s features metal and glass design with a good in-hand feel. It also has gorilla glass 3 at the front for protection against scratches. On the front, it features a fingerprint scanner below the display, power key and volume rockers towards the right-hand side, a dual hybrid SIM card tray at the left, charging port, primary mic and speaker grille are at the bottom while the top of the phone remains free of any ports. On the rear is a 13 MP camera with LED Flash, while on the front, on top fo the display is a 20 MP front facing camera with large sensor side and Moonlight flash, more about cameras in the camera section below.
Summarising the design of this phone, it looks premium and feels good in the hand. It has a stylish and attractive design.
Vivo V5s Display
The display is a High Definition panel of 5.5-inch size diagonally. The pixel per inch density of this display is around 267 ppi. With large screen to body ratio, the aesthetics of the front of the phone look good. The colour production is good, contrast is high and the quality of panel used is light with no fading or discolouration even when looking at it at an angle. Although we wished the resolution was 1080p instead of 720p, but in reality, the quality of the panel and colour production more than makeup for it.
Vivo V5s Cameras
The more interesting camera on this phone is at the front and not at the rear. The front camera is a 20 MP camera which comes with Moonlight flash technology for soft diffused flashlights to improve the picture taking capabilities even when it is dark. The front camera can also record 1080p videos. It takes very detailed selfies with the wide angle front facing camera. Even when the light is not so perfect, the front Moonlight flash adds soft diffused light to the scene and makes it much better than it would have been without it.
The rear camera is a 13 MP shooter with F/2.2 aperture and PDAF focusing technology. It also takes very crisp and detailed shots in normal light with shallow depth of field effects. The focusing is fast and pictures come out sharp. In low light as well, the performance is pleasing, pictures get very little noise and good clarity for shots taken in dim light as well.

In terms of specs and performance, Vivo V5s gets an octa-core Mediatek processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, coupled with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal memory of which around 51 GB is the user available memory. For graphics, it uses Mali T860MP2 GPU. The performance is smooth and stutter-free. The multi-tasking is smooth, apps open fast and memory management is also good.
Vivo V5s Battery
This phone uses a 3000 mAh battery and comes with a standard 5 volt 2 Amp wall charger. The chipset is quite frugal and uses the battery very efficiently. You can expect a full day of use on this phone on a full charge if you are a moderate user.
Vivo V5s Software
It runs on Vivo’s Funtouch 3.0 OS which runs on top of Android Marshmallow (6.0) OS. It comes with an easy to use and intuitive UI, quick toggles slide up from below and there are many such cool tricks up its sleeves. It also features app clone feature which lets you use two accounts of Whatsapp, Facebook and other such apps on your smartphone.
