Google has confirmed that the Pixel 2 will be available in India at Rs 61,000 for the price in India for the 64GB variant and at Rs 70,000 for the 128GB variant. Whereas the Pixel 2 XL will cost Rs 73,000 and Rs 82,000 for the 64GB and 128GB variants, respectively.

Both models will exclusively available online via Flipkart and over 1,000 offline stores across the country. Pre-orders for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL start from October 26. While the Pixel 2 will go on sale on November 1, the Pixel 2 XL will be available from November 15. In the US, prices for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL start at $649 (approx Rs 42,200) and $849 (approx Rs 55,250), respectively.

While the Pixel 2 features a 5.0-inch Cinematic 127-mm display with full-HD (1080 x 1920pixels) resolution, support for DCI-P3 color space (covers of 95 percent), and 18:9 aspect ratio. The Pixel 2 XL comes with a 6.0-inch P-OLED display with QHD+ (2880 x 1440pixels) resolution, a pixel density of 538ppi, 100 percent DCI-P3 color space support, and 18:3 aspect ratio. Both the displays are protected by 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Both new handsets are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB of RAM. The internal storage cannot be expanded via a micro SD card. While the Pixel 2 is backed by a 2700mAh battery, the Pixel 2 XL comes with a 3520mAh battery.

Camera

Both the smartphones feature a 12.2-megapixel rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS) and electronic image stabilization (EIS). The 8-megapixel front camera comes with a f/2.4 aperture. Other features include an enhanced version of Portrait Mode (works with both the rear and front cameras).

Google claims that the camera on Pixel 2 series is the best-judged smartphone camera by DxO. In the DxO tests, the Pixel 2 camera gets 98 points, which is 4 points higher than the Galaxy Note 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus. Still, the lack of dual cameras makes the upcoming devices less exciting than their rivals.

Unlike Samsung and Apple, Google is more or less sticking with the standard design for the Pixel 2 series. The new flagship smartphones come with a two-toned design (half glass and half metal), similar to the first-gen Pixel handsets. Both new smartphones look similar, the only difference being the display size and battery capacity. While the Google Pixel 2 measures 145.7 x 69.7 x 7.8mm and weighs 143 grams. The Google Pixel 2 XL measures 157.9 x 76.7 x 7.9mm and weighs 175 grams.

Both the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL come with IP67 rating (water and dust-proof body). The 3.5mm headphone jack has been ditched in favor of USB Type-C for both charging and music. Google is offering an adapter for USB Type-C to 3.5mm jack with the new handsets. While the stereo speakers are placed in the front, a fingerprint sensor can be found on the back panel. The new handsets will come in multiple color options (Shade of Blue, Black, and White).

The new Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL run Android 8.0 Oreo operating system. Both handsets will get 3 years of the Android software update. A new launcher with Google search bar is added on the bottom of the screen.

The Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL come with Active Edge feature (similar to the squeezable frame on HTC U11), which allows you to squeeze the smartphone to launch Google Assistant. Unlike last year, HTC is only making the smaller Pixel (Walleye) model. The Pixel XL2 will be manufactured by old-Google partner LG. However, HTC has reportedly contributed to the design and development of both the Pixel 2 models.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, 3G and 4G (with support for Band 40 used by some LTE networks in India). Sensors on the new smartphones include Compass Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor, Gyroscope, and Barometer.

The new Google smartphones are decent improvements over their predecessors. The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will be competing with the latest high-end offerings from Apple and Samsung.
