According to a Gizmodo report, somewhere around a dozen employees of Google have quit the tech giant. The move has come due to the company’s involvement in an AI drone program for the Pentagon. The project is named Project Maven. Moreover, around 4,000 employees are demanding that the American company end the Google military AI program with the US in a petition. It even states that Google should avoid military work.
Project Maven is a tie-up between the Pentagon and Google. It helps the military to study drone footage quicker through software. In the Google military AI project, the artificial intelligence detects humans and objects for review.
Google Military AI Program VS Staffers
The employees who resigned from the company mentioned ethical concerns regarding the company’s involvement in political and military issues.
There have been reports circulating that the company under Sundar Pichai has become less transparent with its workers about its decisions. According to the reports, the company has become least concerned about opposition stance from its employees.

An employee told Gizmodo, “I wasn’t happy just voicing my concerns internally. The strongest possible statement I could take against this was to leave.”
Project Maven’s opposition has been growing with time within the echelons of the company. Last month, around 3,100 staffers had signed the petition. Currently, roughly 5.4% of the employees have taken their stance against the Google military AI program.
Even after negative reaction from its employees, Google is continuing with the project as its open source.
Many of the resigned staffers and petitioners say that the project is being run even though Google’s mantra is “don’t be evil”. The mantra has been a part of Google’s policy in all its workings.
Even though Google has stated that the tech is not being used for combat operations, the move has still hurt its workers. Moreover, artificial intelligence and ethics personalities are supporting the petition. They even want the company to back an autonomous weapons-banning treaty. This is due to Google’s base to the rest of the world, and not just America.
