Amazon has added support for the Hindi language (alongside Hinglish) to the Alexa voice assistant. Now, Amazon Echo users can set up Hindi as their default language. Amazon currently offers six Echo devices (smart speakers/ smart display).
Alexa in Hindi available on a range of smart speakers by Bose. Amazon states that other brands (Motorola, MyBox, Boat, Portronics, Fingers, Sony, iBall, Dish, etc) will update their existing Alexa-built in devices to support Hindi and Hinglish soon.
Amazon claims that the Alexa is now capable of understanding Hindi/ Hinglish speaking customers in various contexts, dialects, and accents.
Users can ask their Alexa device for varied Hindi content such as jokes, shayaris, games, Panchatantra stories, and Bollywood dialogues. It can even spellings of words in Hindi.
“With today’s launch, you will notice that Alexa has become more local. Alexa will not only understand and respond in Hindi or Hinglish but, is also armed with a lot of knowledge about topics that interest users in the country ranging from local information to music, and from Bollywood to cricket,” said Puneesh Kumar, Country Manager for Alexa Experiences and Devices, Amazon India.

How To Use Hindi, Hinglish Commands On Amazon Alexa Voice Assistant
- On your Alexa supporting device, just ask, “Alexa, help me set up Hindi.”
- Follow instructions
- That’s it!
- You can give commands like “Bollywood ke latest gane sunao”, “cricket score batao”, “sher ki aawaaz sunao”, or “Alexa, apne baare mei batao”.
Alternatively, Amazon Echo owners can change their device language via language options inside the device settings on the Alexa app.
Echo Show users can access the settings section by swiping down from the top of the screen.

In India, Amazon Alexa arrived was introduced in 2017. Last year, Amazon Echo is said to have a 59 percent share in the Indian smart speakers market (followed by Google Home with 39 percent unit share).
While the voice-assistant can understand and pronounce local places, names, songs, etc, it only supported English or other international languages.

We are grateful to Indian customers who contributed to Hindi development through the Cleo skill,” said Rohit Prasad, Vice President, and Head Scientist, Alexa AI, Amazon.
The e-commerce giant is working with multiple developers to add Alexa skills in Hindi. This includes over 30 brands such as Ola, ChuChu TV, All India Radio, RedFM, and Amar Chitra Katha.
“We look forward to Alexa delighting our Hindi-speaking customers and working with developers in India to invent many more Hindi skills,” he added.
Amazon is also working to add simultaneous multi-language support to the voice assistant. Users will soon be able to speak to Alexa in Hindi and English without changing the language setting back and forth.
As of now, there is no timeline about the addition of support for other Indian languages.
